Te Rā: The Māori sail – by Ariana Tikao, illustrated by Mat Tait

Te Rā, which translates as “the sail” in te reo Māori, is the only known customary Māori sail in existence. Woven from harakeke more than 200 years ago, Te Rā has for many years been held in storage at the British Museum in London. Te Rā is a powerful symbol of Māori exploration, expertise and adaptation.

In 1922 Te Rangihīroa (Sir Peter Buck) challenged future weavers to visit and study Te Rā in order to revitalise the mātauraka – knowledge, wisdom and skill – embedded in it.

In July 2023, our oldest taonga will once again be brought into the light as it returns home to Aotearoa.

Evocatively written by Ariana Tikao from the point of view of Te Rā and beautifully illustrated by Mat Tait, this book commemorates the homecoming of our oldest taonga, and celebrates our past, present and future as New Zealanders.

Format: This is a hardcover pull out book.

Language: this book uses both English and te reo Māori.
