Description
This detailed description of the lunar month, the changes in the environment and the people’s activities according to the phases of the moon is a repository of customary knowledge.
It is written in both Māori and English by Wiremu Tawhai (Te Whānau-ā-Apanui), a recognised expert on oral literature and an authority on maramataka, the Māori lunar calendar, an advisor to national science organisations, and a recipient of a Tā Kingi Ihaka Award for his work in strengthening Māori culture throught the support of Māori arts.
Set out here is the arrangement of the nights of the maramataka, the lunar month, according to the ancient knowledge of Te Whānau-ā-Apanui together with the elders’ understanding of it, and as they saw it in their time and in their region.
It is based on traditional knowledge orally handed down to them by their forebears, and from them to us.
