On one side it contains the story of Kawariki and Tutira. This is a traditional Māori story about lovers Tutira and Kawariki. Tutira is transformed into a shark by Kawariki’s angry father who had promised his daughter’s hand in marriage to a neighbouring tribe. Hinemoana, atua of the ocean is so struck by Kawariki’s grief she alters Tutira’s curse.
