Along with a discussion of current research and knowledge about health and culture, the authors provide case studies from their own experiences of working with Māori to restore well-being.

About the Authors:

Te Kani Kingi (Ngāti Pūkeko, Ngāti Awa, Ngāi Tai) is a professor at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi in Whakatāne. His specialist interests are mental health research, psychometrics and Māori health. 

 

Emeritus Professor Sir Mason Durie (Rangitāne, Ngāti Kauwhata, Ngāti Raukawa) is one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most esteemed academics and public intellectuals, widely recognised for his pioneering work in Māori health, education, and development. His career, spanning more than five decades, has profoundly shaped public policy, mental health services, and Indigenous advancement across the motu.

Dr Hinemoa Elder (Te Aupouri, Ngati Kuri, Te Rarawa and Ngapuhi) has lived on Waiheke Island for 21 years.

Hinemoa is a child and adolescent psychiatrist, working at the Child and Family Unit at Starship Hospital, in Auckland. She is also a Māori Strategic Leader for the Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) for the ageing brain.

In 2019, Hinemoa was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to psychiatry and Māori.

Dr Rees Tapsell (Ngāti Whakaue – Te Arawa Waka) specialised in forensic psychiatry, is a clinical lecturer and has been involved in developing several Māori specific approaches to providing mental health care for Māori in government and NGO settings for more than 30 years.

 

Mark Lawrence (Te Rarawa) currently practices as a consultant psychiatrist for the Bay of Plenty District Health Board in Tauranga. 

 

Simon Bennett (Ngāti Whakaue (Te Arawa), Patu Harakeke (Ngā Puhi), Kāti Waewae (Kai Tahu) worked for several years as a clinical psychologist and is currently a senior lecturer at Massey University and has been the coordinator of clinical psychology training at Massey’s Wellington campus.
